BANGKOK, Thailand - Thailand's Football fans were furious after the Thai Premier League was called off with three rounds of matches to be played.
The decision was made following Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej's death last week aged 88 after seven decades on the throne.
The government announced a 30-day mourning across the country. During the period, people were expected to wear black or dark clothing and withhold from any entertainment activity including sports, concerts and movies.
With Thailand's football season being forced to cut short - Muangthong United were crowned Thai League champions. The league cup winner would be decided in a lottery. But the decision was a blow for the clubs that were relegated.
After three match days, they could have survived the season but that was not the case unfortunately.
FA Thailand initially announced the disrupted end to the season but later decided to hold further discussion after the relegated teams lodged appeals. At the meeting, 17 out of 18 clubs agreed to the decision. However, it was believed that those that agreed, must had been under pressure.
According to Thailand's strict lese-majeste law, criticising members of the royal family is a criminal offence and a risk football clubs could not take.
One of the relegated clubs, Chainat Hornbill voted in favour of the cancellation, but its vice-president Anirut Nakasai said he would consider raising the issue with FIFA.
"I would like to inform you that we do agree with the decision to cancel matches, because we can mourn for the loss of the king, and to remember his majesty's boundless and gracious kindness. But we will fight for justice and fairness," Nakasai wrote on Facebook.
Meanwhile Pansa Suwanthichakorn, a supporter of Bangkok United, who were trailing eventual champions Muangthong United by five points, said the remaining matches should have been postponed rather than cancelled.
"They could have asked the clubs to observe a minute's silence before the start of every remaining match until the season ends. This way, I think football fans would understand. Bangkok United normally fight against relegation. I had never ever thought we would get this far. It's a pity that we didn't have chance to fight for the title," Pansa said.
Many upset Thai football fans said that the decision should not have been made so early. "They should have waited to calm down, waited for our society to feel OK, then they could make announcement," they said.
However, there were others who understood the situation. One of them said, "The cancellation should be a lesson for teams to perform well from the beginning of the season."
Thailand's World Cup qualifier against Australia will however be played as per schedule next month. But there would be limitations to the fans' behaviour. Thailand initially requested for a neutral venue but it was decided to be played at Bangkok's Rajamangala Stadium on November 15.
Football Federation Australia asked Australian fans attending the match to wear black, white or grey clothing and also instructed not to take musical instruments such as drums and whistles. In addition to that, fans won't be able to cheer or chant as well.
In a statement FFA said, "As the match coincides with a period of mourning FFA asks all Australian fans attending the match and who are in Thailand to be respectful of the local customs."
Thailand are at the bottom of the Group B table in WC qualifiers, while the Socceroos are placed second behind Saudi Arabia in the third round of AFC qualification.
