YANGON, Myanmar: Myanmar's military authorities have transferred deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi to a prison in the capital Naypyitaw last week after Myanmar courts ruled against her.
The 77-year old Nobel Laureate was transferred from an undisclosed location where she had been held since her government was ousted in a coup last year.
"She was transferred to prison under the law and is being kept in solitary confinement," a spokesman said in a statement.
Since she was toppled by the military in February 2021, she has been charged with some 20 criminal offenses carrying a combined jail term of nearly 190 years, including multiple counts of corruption.
Suu Kyi denies all charges.
Sources who spoke to the BBC's Burmese-language service said Suu Kyi was being held in a separate building inside the prison in Naypyitaw.
Also, a source told Reuters that all legal proceedings against Suu Kyi would be moved to a courtroom inside the jail facility.
Western countries have demanded Suu Kyi's release and called the charges against Suu Kyi and her convictions a sham.
Media reports said that Australian economist Sean Turnell, who previously advised Suu Kyi, has also been charged with violating a state secrets law and has also been moved to the Naypyitaw jail.
Court proceedings against Suu Kyi's have taken place behind closed doors, with only limited information reported by state media.
