SEOUL, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's health authorities on Wednesday confirmed the country's first five cases of Omicron variant infection amid a higher number of COVID-19 cases.
A married couple, who were fully vaccinated on Oct. 28, had traveled to Nigeria between Nov. 14 to 23. The couple arrived here on Nov. 24 and tested positive for the COVID-19 the following day.
The couple and their acquaintance were confirmed to be infected with the potentially more transmissible Omicron variant in genetic sequencing tests, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).
Two more women, who visited Nigeria between Nov. 13 to 22, also tested positive for the variant, putting the total Omicron cases at five.
Four more cases suspected of the Omicron infection have been under analysis.
The country's first cases of the Omicron infection came amid the surging number of new COVID-19 cases.
In the latest tally, South Korea reported 5,123 more COVID-19 cases for the past 24 hours, logging the highest daily number since the country's first case was found in January last year.
